July 2023 : Filling, Fairing, Filling, Fairing, Undercoating the Hull

Image
The beginning of the fairing process. Sanded the high build primer  then filled pin holes etc before the first full screed of epoxy filler     My selection of torture boards  There is a lot of shape in the forward sections of the boat  so I used shorter boards in this area Initial fairing completed & 3 coats of epoxy high build primer applied It took 2 fills and torture boarding to get the hull ready for high build primer.  Next step is to board the high build & set up to mark out the water line.  Pretty happy with the result  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Epoxy Filler : ATL Composites Technifill High Build Primer : International Paints Interprotect

June 2023 : Let the fibreglass sheathing begin

Image
At this point I had prepared everything for the fibreglass sheathing. Chines, transom & stem  have been taped & sanded.  I had an offer from some mates in the industry to help me do the fibreglass sheathing. A job that would have taken me considerable time on my own. Chris, Alec & David ( Hatchy ) and two of Chris's trades assistants, Julian & Alejandro came over to help. So with 4 shipwrights & two TA's we managed to do 2 layers of 600 gsm Double Bias & peel ply over the entire hull in 5 hours. Not a bad effort. A late lunch & a few beers after we had everything cleaned up made for a great day.  Many thanks to Chris and the boys from Koreman Marine Composites ( KMC ).      Cutting & fitting all of the fibreglass before any rein is mixed  Chris, Hatchy, Alec. Great friends & great Boatbuilders I've known these guys for many years & worked on projects together  Alec (the younger looking bearded one) did his apprenticeship with me &

February - March 2023 : Template making & continue fitting plywood planking

Image
As I am building from plans I have to make templates for each section of planking.  Batten templates are an easy way to get the shape of the plywood hull panels. ------------------------------------------------------------- Scarfing the panels together on the boat  ------------------------------------------------------------- More templates & panels for the forward section. These ones were quite a challenge to fit & glue into position. -------------------------------------------------------------
